License Compliance is a serious issue for Oracle customers. It is easy to become "under licensed" when using Oracle software. The complexity of the metrics and terms, along with the lack of license keys and the ease with which organisations can download software, make it almost unavoidable. Oracle relies on customers to manage their own compliance obligations. If Oracle suspects a customer has breached a term of any license or misused any software then they will exercise their right to audit that customer. Oracle often takes a rigorous approach to enforcing its rights imposing penalties that are sometimes viewed as harsh and even punitive. Staying on top of your compliance with good license management is by far the best approach. However, you could be unlucky and Oracle may just select you.
